Adventures at the Chimney Bluffs State Park

Enjoying my three weeks of unemployment before heading to Africa (see Benin There, Done That), I decided to take some New York adventures!

Most people when they think of New York, they think of New York City. However, NY State is quite rural, and has a beautiful countryside and idyllic state parks.

The other day I headed over to the Chimney Bluffs State Park, which is just off of Route 104 on the lakeside. It was the perfect day trip.

Why you should visit Chimney Bluffs State Park

The bluffs have an amazing view of Lake Ontario.

It’s a gradual, approximately 30-45 minute hike from the lakefront to the top of the bluffs.

The unique view of the bluffs can’t be beat. These bluffs were formed long ago, deposited by glaciers. The bluffs were shaped into these pinnacles over time by the elements and waves from the lake.

Hours of Operation and Fees

The park is open all year, from dawn until dusk.

There is a $5 fee per vehicle for parking, from April 1 – October 31.

Best time of year to visit

In my opinion, the best time of year to visit is from May-September. Along the lake the winds can pick up and the temperature is usually cooler than the rest of the state.

I suggest visiting during the summer while it is warm. Some of the trails are narrow and right along the cliff’s edge – during the winter months it may be dangerous to hike them through the snow.

Until next time…
